What is HARD water?

Hard water is one of the more frequent problems homeowners face. Dissolved Calcium and Magnesium particles are to blame for the hardness in hard water. You may have seen the remnants of the particles that leave spots on your glassware and dishes, soap scum in your shower, and shorten the lifespan of your appliances. Hard water also tends to leave your skin feeling dry and itchy, and your hair dull and lifeless.

Soft Water -- Less than 1 GPG
Slightly Hard -- 1 to 3.5 GPG
Moderately Hard -- 3.5 to 7 GPG
Hard -- 7 to 10.5 GPG
Very Hard -- 10.5 and higher

The Water Quality Association (WQA) characterizes hard water as
containing dissolved hardness minerals above 1 grain per gallon (GPG).

How does a WATER SOFTENER work?

Culligan has resolved the most practical method for softening water is through "ion exchange." This process occurs in the ion exchange tank, when the hard particles that have dissolved in the water are swapped for soft particles. Once all of the soft ions have been weakened by the hard ions, they must be recharged through a process called regeneration.

Why do my fixtures have BLUE-GREEN STAINING?

While blue and green are some of our favorite colors here, at Culligan, you don’t want to find them around your water fixtures! This discoloration may be caused by acidic water passing through your copper or brass plumbing.

Why do my fixtures have RED-ORANGE STAINING?

This is the second most common water issue that we face, first being hard water. If you are finding this kind of staining, it is probable that you have a great deal of iron in your water.

Why does my water smell like ROTTEN EGGS?

The reasoning behind the rotten egg smell in your water is due to a smelly, colorless gas called hydrogen sulfide. This problem can occur in your water-heater tank, hot and/or cold water.

Why does my water taste like a SWIMMING POOL?

Since the early 1900’s chlorine has been used to disinfect our water supplies and even today it is one of the commonly used chemicals to treat waterborne diseases.
